Benjamin Leroux Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus 2022

Les Charmes-Dessus is the upper part of Meursault's largest premier cru, and Leroux's sliver of 1988-planted vines lies directly beneath Clos des Perrières.

Charmes divides into Dessus and Dessous, and the upper section has been singled out since the 1830s as the better half: the slope is steeper and the soil lighter and stonier, so the wines carry more definition and less breadth than those from the flatter ground below. Leroux acquired this parcel after the 2017 harvest, winning a closely contested tender that also brought him village plots including Clos du Village, along with well-sited parcels in Volnay Santenots and Meursault-Blagny. The wine has real class, a pillowy texture and a long, spicy finish. Five barrels were made this year, one of them new.

Best from four years and good for a decade; serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, lobster or a rich fish in cream sauce.
