Benjamin Leroux Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois 2022

La Pièce Sous Le Bois has become one of Benjamin Leroux's flagship whites, and he farms 1.5 of the 2.2 hectares of Chardonnay planted in it.

Blagny is the hamlet on the wooded hill between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet; whites from its Meursault side carry the Meursault-Blagny name. This is the most extreme and rocky terroir in the Leroux range, lying at 320 to 350 metres with bitterly cold winters and a long ripening season, though the site catches plenty of sun through summer. His conviction that the higher vineyards would matter more as the climate warms is bearing out here. The vines average 50 years of age and are certified biodynamic. Leroux is drawn to what he calls the Saint-Aubin-style character of Blagny, and for this release he used several vessels, among them a glass Wineglobe and a new egg-shaped foudre, setting silky ripeness against spicy mineral grip.

Best from four years and good for a decade; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast veal or a nutty hard cheese.
