Benjamin Leroux Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois Cuvée 1950 is a magnum-only Chardonnay drawn from the oldest vines in the vineyard.

The vines behind this bottling went into the ground in 1950, at the very top of the slope, where yields fall away to almost nothing. The fruit has always been kept apart in the cellar, though it only earned a label of its own from the 2022 vintage. Blagny's standing is a good deal older than that: in the 1920s this ground was sold as Blagny-Montrachet, which tells you plainly how the growers of the day rated it. Only magnums are filled, and only a trickle ever leaves the cellar. A single one made it to Australia this year.

More power here than the standard cuvée, with a tighter, stonier feel and a long saline close. Pour it at around 12 degrees and give it air first. Turbot, lobster or a well-aged hard cheese would do it justice.
