Benjamin Leroux Meursault Les Vireuils 2023

Les Vireuils is a high, late-ripening Meursault lieu-dit that Benjamin Leroux has worked since 2002.

Meursault is the largest of the Côte de Beaune's white-wine villages and the source of its richest Chardonnay, though the higher sites behave quite differently from the fat, low-lying ones. Les Vireuils faces east on pure, rocky limestone soils with some flint, and ripens late. Leroux's holding of 0.77 hectares is spread across three parcels in Vireuils Dessus, one of the higher parts of the village sitting above the well-known Les Chevalières and Rougeots lieux-dits, with vines around 45 years old. He worked with the same parcels while at Domaine du Comte Armand and has continued with them under his own label since 2007. Winemaking follows his usual pattern: whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation and barrel ageing with restrained new wood, so the site's tension and length come through rather than the oak.

Approachable at three years and best between five and ten; serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a firm washed-rind cheese.
