Description
Benjamin Leroux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Hauts comes from three small parcels of iron-rich red clay at the foot of the vineyard widely held to give Pommard's greatest wines.
Les Rugiens is Pommard's most famous premier cru, its upper section, Rugiens-Hauts, distinguished by iron-rich red clay that gives the deep, firmly structured style the village is known for. Leroux has long said that Rugiens was the one climat that would tempt him back to Pommard, the commune where he made his name at Comte Armand with the Clos des Epeneaux. A long-term contract with the owner of his Volnay Caillerets parcel returned him here in 2017. His holding covers 0.6 hectares across three small plots of vines between 25 and 90 years old, lying at the foot of Rugiens-Hauts. Only the youngest fruit was destemmed, leaving around half the crop as whole berries. The wine is bottled under natural cork.
This wants five to twelve years in the cellar; serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, venison or a mature hard cheese.
