Description
Benjamin Leroux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Hauts comes from three small parcels at the foot of the vineyard many consider Pommard's finest.
Les Rugiens takes its name from the iron-rich red clay that runs through it, and the upper section, Rugiens-Hauts, is the part regularly argued to deserve grand cru status. Leroux worked these soils for years at Domaine du Comte Armand, and a long-term contract with the owner of his Volnay Caillerets parcel brought him back to the vineyard in 2017. His holding covers 0.6 hectares across three plots, with vines between 25 and 90 years old. Only the youngest fruit is destemmed, leaving about half the crop as whole berries and 50 per cent whole bunches in the ferment. Four barrels were made this year. The wine is dark and layered in the way Rugiens should be, but carries the fine tannins and restraint that mark the Leroux reds.
Give it five years and expect it to hold for fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, venison or a mature hard cheese.
