Description
Benjamin Leroux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Hauts comes from three small parcels at the foot of the climat many regard as the source of Pommard's greatest wines.
Leroux has long said that if one premier cru were to bring him back to Pommard it would be Les Rugiens, the vineyard he worked with such success during his years at Comte Armand. A long-term contract with the owner of his Volnay Caillerets parcel returned him to it in 2017, and to the same iron-rich red clay soils. The holding runs to 0.6 hectares across three small parcels, with vines between 25 and 90 years old, lying at the base of Rugiens-Hauts, the upper of the two sectors and the one considered clearly superior. Only the youngest fruit was destemmed, leaving half the crop as whole bunches. Five barrels were made. The wine is dark and layered but carries the fine tannins that mark the range.
Worth five to twenty years; serve with roast beef, venison or aged hard cheese at 16-18°C.
