Benjamin Leroux Pommard 2017

A village Pommard from a winemaker who spent fifteen vintages running Domaine du Comte Armand in the same commune.

Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay, makes only red wine, and its clay-rich, iron-tinged soils give more frame and grip than its neighbours, so even village bottlings generally want a few years. Benjamin Leroux became technical director at Comte Armand in 1999 at the age of twenty-four and stayed through fifteen harvests before setting up his own business in Beaune in 2007, in an 1848 building once occupied by Jaboulet-Vercherre. He works as both grower and buyer, around 30 hectares in all, of which some eight are his own and farmed organically and biodynamically, the remainder bought from sustainable, organic and biodynamic growers between Chassagne-Montrachet and Gevrey-Chambertin. For the reds the whole-bunch proportion is decided parcel by parcel and ranges from none to eighty per cent, fermentation is on ambient yeast with about three weeks on skins, and ageing runs twelve to twenty-two months with no more than thirty per cent new oak.

Give it three to five years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, mushroom dishes or hard alpine cheeses.
