Description

Benjamin Leroux Pommard is a village wine drawn from two vineyards on the Volnay side of the commune, one high on the slope and one low.

Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay in the Côte de Beaune and has a reputation for the firmest, most structured reds of the southern half of the Côte d'Or. Benjamin Leroux knows the village as well as anyone, having managed Domaine du Comte Armand and its Clos des Epeneaux for many years before setting up his own operation in Beaune. This cuvée is a blend of Les Vaumuriens, high on the hillside, and Les Cras on the lower slope, both lying towards Volnay rather than towards Beaune. Leroux notes that the cooler hillside fruit from Les Vaumuriens brings freshness and balance to the blend, tempering the natural weight of the appellation. The fruit was entirely de-stemmed and the wine raised in roughly twenty per cent new oak.

Give it three to five years and expect it to hold well beyond that. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, roast lamb or a mushroom tart.
