Description

Benjamin Leroux Pommard is a village wine blended from Les Vaumuriens high on the slope and Les Cras below it, both on the Volnay side of the commune.

Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay and is the sturdier of the two neighbours, its clay-heavy soils giving reds with more grip and darker fruit. Leroux, who ran Domaine du Comte Armand in the village before founding his own house in Beaune in 2007, returned to Pommard in force with this cuvée and the premier cru Rugiens-Hauts. The blend draws on Les Vaumuriens, high on the slope, and Les Cras on the lower ground; both lie towards Volnay, and Leroux notes that the cooler hillside fruit from Vaumuriens brings freshness and balance to the assemblage. The fruit was entirely destemmed and the wine raised with roughly 20 per cent new oak. Quantities are small.

Drinkable from release and better still with three to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, duck confit or a rich mushroom dish.
