Description

Benjamin Leroux Pommard is a village wine drawn from three sites, including a slice of the prized Petits Noizons at the top of the hill.

Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay and gives the sturdiest reds of that stretch of the Côte de Beaune, built on clay-rich soils and firm tannin. Benjamin Leroux knows the commune as well as anyone, having managed Domaine du Comte Armand and its Clos des Épeneaux for fifteen years before setting up his own house. This blend comes from three locations: Les Cras and Les Vaumuriens-Hauts on the Volnay side, where the cooler hillside fruit of Vaumuriens brings freshness and balance to the naturally warmer Cras, and a parcel of Petits Noizons, facing south on shallow limestone soils near the top of the slope. About half the stems were retained across the three parcels. Production ran to four barrels, one of them a new 456-litre cask.

Worth four or five years in the cellar and good for a decade beyond. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, roast lamb or a hard alpine cheese.
