Description
Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Hauts Jarrons sits in the heart of the Premier Cru on the east-facing, Beaune side of the village.
Savigny is split by the Rhoin valley, and the two sides give noticeably different wines: the Pernand side firmer, the Beaune side more elegant. Les Hauts Jarrons lies on the latter, and the vines belong to a close friend of Benjamin Leroux. As across most of the Côte d’Or the soils are clay and limestone, but the clay in this part of the village is light and sandy, which is why the wine carries more flesh than the village cuvée while also showing greater finesse — a combination that makes the site particularly useful in powerful vintages. Fermentation used only a pinch of whole bunch. This is the kind of Premier Cru that drinks well from release without giving up its capacity to age.
Enjoyable young, though three to seven years in bottle will add complexity. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, game or a mushroom ragout.
