Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Hauts Jarrons 2023

Les Hauts Jarrons is a Premier Cru on the east-facing Beaune side of Savigny, the sector that gives the commune's most elegant reds.

Savigny-lès-Beaune sits in a valley behind the hill of Beaune and is split between two slopes: the Pernand side, which tends to firmness, and the Beaune side, which tends to perfume. Benjamin Leroux, who set up his own house in Beaune in 2007 after years running Domaine du Comte Armand, sources these vines from a close friend who owns the parcel in the heart of the Premier Cru. As with most of the Côte d'Or the soils are clay and limestone, but here the clay is light and sandy, so there is more flesh than in the village cuvée and also more finesse. All the fruit was destemmed for this vintage, and the wine aged entirely in 228-litre barrels of up to five years of age, keeping the oak in the background.

Drinks well from release and will benefit from three to seven years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast duck, pork belly or a mushroom risotto.
