Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 2019

Benjamin Leroux's Savigny-lès-Beaune is drawn mainly from two named village sites at opposite ends of the commune.

Savigny lies in a side valley behind the hill of Corton, and its reds have long been among the better-value wines of the Côte de Beaune, firmer than Beaune itself and quicker to show their fruit. Leroux, who spent years running Domaine du Comte Armand before setting up on his own account in Beaune, takes the bulk of this cuvée from Aux Fourneaux in the north of the village and Ez Connardises in its heart, with a single barrel of the premier cru Les Hauts Jarrons added this year. Twenty per cent whole bunches were used, all from the Fourneaux parcel, where a high proportion of Pinot Fin and low yields gave real concentration. Ageing ran fourteen months in a mix of foudre and 228-litre Burgundian pieces, twenty per cent new. The bottle is under screwcap.

Approachable young and good for six to eight years; serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, braised beef or mushrooms on toast.
