Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune 2021

Benjamin Leroux Savigny-lès-Beaune is a village red drawn mostly from Aux Fourneaux and matured entirely in 600-litre barrels.

Savigny-lès-Beaune runs up a side valley behind Beaune and gives some of the more open and approachable reds of the Côte de Beaune. The lion’s share of this bottling comes from Aux Fourneaux, a lieu-dit in the north of the village where Leroux works a good deal of Pinot Fin, a low-yielding cultivar of Pinot Noir that gives small berries and concentrated fruit. Les Conardises contributed as well in this vintage, and both parcels were fully destemmed, so there is no whole-bunch character in the wine. Maturation was entirely in 600-litre barrels rather than standard barriques, a larger format that keeps oak influence to a minimum. It is bottled under screwcap, still unusual for red Burgundy and well suited to a wine made in this style.

Drinking well now and over the next five years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or grilled mushrooms.
