Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs 2024

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a Pinot Noir from a 0.64-hectare walled monopole at the top of the village.

The clos belongs to the family of Jean-Charles Carré, Leroux's right-hand man in the cellar, and almost nobody saw the wine before Leroux began bottling it in 2007. It is Volnay's highest 1er Cru, on fine light soils that make delicate wines by nature. Vines run to eighty years old, averaging fifty, with a block of twenty-year-old massale cuttings taken from Comte Armand's Clos des Epeneaux. Carré and Leroux farm it biodynamically and treat it as their test bed, so any new idea in the vineyard gets tried here first.

Geranium and violet on the nose, then sweet red fruit, aniseed and more structure than Volnay usually shows. Serve at 16 degrees. It will be superb with roast duck or hare in five to ten years; open now with something simpler like roast chicken.
