Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2024

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is a Pinot Noir from the mid-slope site many growers call the finest in the commune.

There is an old line in the Côte de Beaune: if you have not drunk Caillerets, you do not know Volnay. Leroux calls it the king of the village, and his excitement at getting a foothold here was hard to disguise. The fourteen-hectare vineyard sits mid-slope on the Meursault boundary, split into three lieux-dits and farmed by names like d'Angerville, Lafarge and Pousse d'Or. His half-hectare of Pinot Fin lies in the part known as Caillerets-Dessus, planted in 1945, 1985 and the late nineties. Eighty per cent whole bunches went into the 2024 ferment, and only half the usual volume was made.

Deep and powerful for Volnay, with spice, florals and a finish that keeps unfolding. Decant and serve at 17 degrees, or better still leave it a decade. Roast pigeon, venison, or truffled potatoes when the time comes.
