Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2024

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans is a Pinot Noir from the middle of the appellation, on the slope directly below the village.

The name comes from an old French word for centre, which is almost certainly how the cru got it, since this is the heart of Volnay, beneath the houses. Leroux's 0.65 hectares sit close to Clos de la Barre and spill over into the Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil is fine clay threaded with limestone, and it holds moisture well through dry spells, which has counted for more than usual in recent seasons. Vines average fifty years of age. Four barrels came out of 2024.

Perfume first: violets, red cherry, a little spice. The palate carries more weight than the nose suggests, with fine tannin and good length. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast duck breast, mushrooms on toast, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
