Benjamin Leroux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Au-Dessus des Malconsorts is a magnum drawn from a rocky upper parcel so small it fills barely a single barrel.

Vosne-Romanée lies at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, and Aux Malconsorts is its southernmost Premier Cru, running along the boundary with Nuits-Saint-Georges. Au-Dessus des Malconsorts is the upper section of that climat, where the soil is thinner and stonier than the main body of the vineyard, giving a more mineral and markedly perfumed expression of the site. Benjamin Leroux, who managed Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard before setting up his own Beaune-based domaine and négoce in 2007, holds only a sliver here; a typical year yields between 500 and 600 litres. The 2021 vines produced very small bunches and berries, fermented with around 70 per cent whole bunches and raised in a single one-year-old barrel. The magnum format slows maturation further.

Give it five years and expect it to hold well beyond a decade; serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom risotto or a mild washed-rind cheese.
