Benjamin Leroux Vosne-Romanée 2023

Leroux's village Vosne-Romanée gathers five separate lieux-dits planted almost exclusively to old selections of Pinot Fin.

Vosne-Romanée is the most celebrated red commune of the Côte de Nuits, and even its village wines carry the spice and silken texture the name implies. Benjamin Leroux now controls two hectares here. Running north to south, the sites are Maizières Basses, organically farmed with sixty-year-old Pinot Fin; a small portion of Les Violettes; a parcel of old-vine Pinot Fin in Genaivrières, just beneath Domaine Leroy's vines and new to Leroux; and Les Jacquines, Au Village and Au-Dessus de la Rivière. Between them they span the village's range of terroirs, and each was vinified separately before blending. The 40 per cent whole-bunch quota comes mainly from the northern parcels, and the blend was raised with roughly 15 per cent new oak. Plant material of this quality is a large part of what sets the wine apart.

Give it five years and expect it to hold for fifteen. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast game, duck or a truffled mushroom dish.
