Description
Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie comes from two parcels totalling just over 0.3 hectares, the domaine's largest premier cru holding.
La Maltroie sits directly below the village of Chassagne-Montrachet and is one of the appellation's best-known premiers crus. Even as Benoît Moreau's largest premier cru, the holding is tiny at a little over 0.3 hectares, split between two parcels of quite different character. The first, with vines of around seventy years, lies on thin, very stony, calcareous soils and contributes finesse and a salty mineral thread. The second, planted about fifty years ago, sits on slightly richer brown clay and produces a more opulent, layered wine; blended together they give the cuvée both cut and flesh. Moreau's winemaking is consistent across the range, with hand picking, natural ferments, long lees ageing and a deliberately restrained use of new oak, so the two soil types remain legible in the finished wine.
Perfumed and rocky, it can be enjoyed from release and will develop over eight to ten years; serve with turbot, roast chicken or Comté at 10-12°C.
