Description
Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gain is made from a handkerchief-sized parcel of 70-year-old vines on the thin, chalky upper part of the cru.
Champs Gain lies in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, just below the well-known En Cailleret, and like most of the surrounding premiers crus it is largely a red clay terroir, a profile that gives wines balancing juicy concentration with mineral finesse. Benoît Moreau's holding is very small and sits on the upper part of the vineyard, where the soil thins out, the chalk content rises and the roots reach bedrock quickly. The parcel is close to the domaine's plots in La Maltroie. Moreau works with old vines of around seventy years here, picks by hand and keeps new oak to a minimum across the range, allowing the site rather than the cellar to shape the wine. The result is powerful and generous, with ripe orchard and stone fruit carried by a firm mineral line.
Rich enough to open young, it will gain from three to five years and hold a decade; serve with roast poultry, lobster or veal in cream sauce at 10-12°C.
