Description

Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge comes from two small parcels of fifty-year-old vines below the village.

Chassagne-Montrachet is known above all for white wine, but the commune has a long red history and its reputation there is rising again. Growers including Olivier Lamy, Thierry Pillot and the Moreau brothers have shown what careful farming and unshowy winemaking can draw from the clay-rich sites, and warmer seasons have made the wines more approachable young than they once were. This bottling comes from two small parcels of fifty-year-old vines on the lower ground below the village. Ten per cent of the bunches went in whole, and the wine was raised with fifteen per cent new oak, a restrained proportion that leaves the fruit and the site to speak. The result is a Pinot Noir with the depth to reward cellaring rather than one made for immediate drinking.

Best from two years and good for eight or so, it suits roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart. Serve at 16-18°C.
