Bernabeleva Madrid Camino de Navaherreros Garnacha 2022

Bernabeleva Camino de Navaherreros is a high-altitude Garnacha grown on the granite sands of the Sierra de Gredos.

The Gredos mountains west of Madrid have become one of Spain's most talked-about sources of Garnacha, where altitude and decomposed granite give red-fruited, perfumed wines a long way from the variety's warm-climate reputation. Bernabeleva works within the San Martín de Valdeiglesias zone, and this is the entry-level bottling in the range, drawn from organically grown estate fruit supplemented by grapes bought from trusted neighbouring growers across a spread of plots. Maceration runs for twenty-five days and includes a proportion of whole bunches, with fermentation split between stainless steel, concrete and large wooden vats. After blending, the wine is raised in upright old wooden vats and bottled without filtration. The old, large-format wood adds no obvious oak flavour, leaving juicy red fruit, sweet spice and a garrigue-like herbal edge in the foreground.

Drink now and over the next five years with grilled lamb, roast vegetables or charcuterie. Serve at 16°C.
