Bernabeleva Madrid Navaherreros Garnacha 2022

Bernabeleva Navaherreros Garnacha is a village-level red from the granite country of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, west of Madrid.

The Sierra de Gredos, in the western reaches of the Vinos de Madrid DO, has become one of Spain's most closely watched sources of high-altitude Grenache, grown on granitic sands at elevations that keep the wines fresh and perfumed. Bernabeleva farms old parcels around San Martín de Valdeiglesias, and this bottling blends fruit from across the estate: different soils, orientations and microclimates, with vine ages between 50 and 90 years. Each site is fermented slowly, spending 40 to 60 days on skins, and one or more parcels usually include a portion of whole bunches. The parcels are aged separately in a combination of 500-litre casks, stainless steel and concrete, the mix varying with the vintage, and the wine is bottled unfiltered after twelve months. The aim, as Bulnes puts it, is to bottle the spirit of the village rather than any single plot.

Approachable now and good for five years or so. Try it with roast lamb, grilled mushrooms or jamón, at 16 to 18°C.
