Bernabeleva Vinos de Madrid Navaherreros Garnacha 2019

Bernabeleva Navaherreros Garnacha is a biodynamically farmed Grenache from old bush vines at around 800 metres in the Sierra de Gredos.

San Martín de Valdeiglesias lies in the westernmost sub-region of D.O. Vinos de Madrid, where sandy, granite-rich highland terroir combines with altitude, aspect and old plantings to give a beguiling and distinctly savoury style of Grenache. Bernabeleva was a pioneer in Gredos and farms biodynamically. Its vineyards still rest chiefly on founder Dr Álvarez Villamil's original 1923 Garnacha and Albillo bush vines, sitting at around 800 metres under the commanding peak of the Cerro de Guisando. Navaherreros is the entry-level Grenache, made from fruit grown across the estate's parcels, where vine age runs from fifty to ninety years over a range of soils, orientations and microclimates. Fruit from each site is vinified and aged separately in a combination of 500-litre casks, stainless steel and concrete tanks, with the mix adjusted to the character of the season.

It is approachable now and will hold for around five years. Serve lightly cool at 15-16°C with roast lamb, grilled quail or a mushroom and thyme tart.
