Bernabeleva Vinos de Madrid Viña Bonita Garnacha 2013

Viña Bonita is a single-plot Grenache from vines planted in 1925 at 735 metres in the granite hills west of Madrid.

Bernabeleva farms in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, on the Madrid side of the Sierra de Gredos, where old bush-vine Grenache on decomposed granite has become one of Spain's most closely watched sources of fine red wine. The Viña Bonita plot has shallower soil than the estate's other sites, so the roots strike the compacted granite bedrock almost immediately. Its south-facing, exposed position makes for a denser, more full-blooded wine than Arroyo del Tórtolas, though it keeps the finesse that marks the house. The wine was matured in used 600-litre oak barrels, then given around six months in stainless steel to settle after blending and before bottling.

Now in its second decade, this is drinking at its peak and should hold for several years yet. Serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, grilled quail or a mushroom tart.
