Description
Bernard Métrat Morgon Terre d'Alizarine is a full-south facing Gamay from vines over seventy years old in the firmest of the northern Beaujolais crus.
Morgon is built on decomposed schist and volcanic rock shot through with iron pyrites, a crumbling ochre stone the locals call roche pourrie, and it is that iron-rich ground that gives the cru its density and its reputation for ageing. The cuvée name points to alizarin, the deep red pigment, a nod to those rusted soils. The vines are more than seventy years old on a full south-facing exposure, giving ripe fruit and low yields. Picking is by hand in whole bunches, fermentation follows the semi-carbonic Beaujolais method with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged before bottling under stelvin to keep it fresh and unoxidised.
Deeper and more mineral than a village Beaujolais, with tannin to carry it; serve at 15 to 16 degrees alongside roast lamb, beef, game or a mushroom risotto.
