Description
Bernard Métrat Moulin-à-Vent La Belle Coudrière comes from sixty-year-old vines in the cru long regarded as the most structured and longest-lived in Beaujolais.
Moulin-à-Vent takes its name from the old stone windmill above Romanèche-Thorins and is unusual among the crus for its manganese-bearing granite, a soil that appears to restrict vine vigour and is traditionally credited with the tannic backbone and ageing capacity that set these wines apart. This parcel is east-facing and low on the slope, on deeper soils that give flesh to balance the cru's natural firmness, with vines of more than sixty years. Fruit is hand-picked in whole bunches and fermented semi-carbonically, though crus of this weight usually see a longer maceration than village Beaujolais. Élevage is unhurried and the wine is bottled under stelvin.
The most structured style in Beaujolais and one that rewards a few years in bottle; serve at around 15 to 16 degrees with roast beef, game birds, duck or aged cheeses.
