Bessin-Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2022

Bessin-Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Montmains comes from just over a hectare on the upper slope of the climat and is one of the few wines at the domaine raised entirely in old oak.

Montmains lies on the left bank of the Serein, south-west of the town of Chablis, and is among the appellation's larger and longest-established premier crus. Bessin-Tremblay, based at La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne, farms a shade over a hectare here, all of it on the upper part of the slope with a south-east aspect on Kimmeridgian marl. The parcel adjoins the domaine's La Forêt vines, and the two were planted at the same time, between 1968 and 1974; until 2006 the fruit from both was vinified together as a single Montmains. This is one of very few cuvées in the range matured entirely in old oak barrels rather than tank, a choice that adds a little breadth without adding oak flavour, and the age of the wood keeps the emphasis on the salinity and fine floral lift the family looks for from this slope.

Approachable on release and worth holding five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled flathead or roast chicken.
