Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is offered here in magnum, the format best suited to long ageing of this historic Tuscan red.

Few names carry as much weight in Italian wine as the family credited with inventing Brunello in the late 1800s. Their Tenuta Greppo estate sits on the high ground south-east of Montalcino, and its Sangiovese is propagated from the property's own clonal selection. Winemaking is deliberately traditional: fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts, and maturation takes place in big, old Slavonian oak casks so the fruit and site are not masked by wood. The 2020 shows the estate's hallmark balance of red fruit, floral lift and firm, polished tannin at a moderate 13.5% alcohol.

A magnum develops more slowly than a standard bottle, which makes it a sound choice for the cellar or a long lunch. Decant gently and pour at 16 to 18 degrees alongside roast lamb, porcini pasta or braised beef cheek.
