Birichino Antle Pinot Noir 1.5L MAGNUM 2016

Birichino Antle Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard mountain Pinot Noir from the Chalone AVA, released in magnum.

High in the Gavilan Mountains at 548 metres, this north-west-facing site sits near the eastern gate of Pinnacles National Park and looks out towards Monterey Bay. The slopes are steep and thick with chalk from an uplifted ancient seabed over decomposing granite, planted to a mix of Chalone 46, Pommard 4 and Dijon 114 and farmed organically. John Locke and Alex Krause pick at night, destem, and ferment naturally in small open-top steel, layering roughly forty per cent of the ripest stems back through the cap. Twelve months follow in older casks, from barrique up to 600-litre demi-muid, then bottling without filtration.

Rose petal and raspberry with a savoury, peppery edge, the tannins soft and the acid keeping everything lively. A decade on, it is sitting exactly where it should. Pour at 15 degrees with duck breast, grilled salmon, or a mushroom risotto.
