Birichino Boer Pinot Noir 1.5L MAGNUM 2017

Birichino Boer Pinot Noir is a Chalone AVA Pinot Noir from an old hillside vineyard below the Pinnacles, bottled in magnum.

Volcanic rock and fault movement made this corner of the Gavilans, and the vineyard sits immediately below the Pinnacles on ground that is chalk from an uplifted ancient seabed over decomposing granite. Dick Woodward planted it to Cabernet in 1969, when it was known locally as the A-Frame vineyard; the steep rows were grafted to several Pinot Noir selections decades ago, and Richard Boer owns and farms them now. Enough sea air reaches this far inland to take the edge off the afternoons, so the fruit ripens evenly. Krause and Locke handle it the way they handle all their Pinot Noir: night picking, wild ferment, older wood, no filtration.

Darker and more mineral than most Californian Pinot Noir, with cranberry, iron and dried herb over a firm chalky grip. Magnums age slowly, so there is no rush at all. Serve at 16 degrees with roast pork, or duck with cherries.
