Birichino Lilo Pinot Noir 1.5L MAGNUM 2018

Birichino Lilo Pinot Noir is a Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir from a steep, marginal, high-elevation block, released in magnum.

The vineyard faces south at 300 metres in the Santa Cruz Mountains, with a clear view down over Monterey Bay and nothing at all to shelter it. Soils are a jumble of schist, shale and sandstone, the slope is severe, and the crop can be tiny. Sitting just above the fog line means every hazard the Pacific throws arrives here first: late frosts at budburst, rain through flowering, wind. The vines went in around a dozen years before this vintage, and working a site like this is a deliberate choice, never a convenience, which tells you something about how Locke and Krause think.

Light in colour and intense in flavour, with cranberry, blood orange and wild herb over a firm acid spine and a cool, stony finish. Serve at 15 degrees. Good with duck, roast quail, or a plate of charcuterie.
