Birichino Scylla 2022

Birichino Scylla is a Carignan-led red blend with Mourvèdre in support, from old vineyards in Lodi and the Central Coast's Santa Clara Valley.

Two century-old Lodi vineyards within 500 metres of each other supply the Carignan that makes up 78 per cent of the 2022. Montague, with its plump bunches, brings juice and crunch; Mule Plane, closer to the river and rockier, brings density and a darker, mineral cast. Both crop low, around four tonnes to the acre at Montague and two at Mule Plane, on fine sandy loam. The Mourvèdre balance was grafted over from 1920s Marsanne in the Besson vineyard using Beaucastel cuttings, and Krause says it fills in the texture the Carignan lacks. Montague fruit was destemmed, Mule Plane went in with whole bunches layered through, and everything spent about eight months in neutral wood.

The brighter and more immediately drinkable of the two Rhône blends here: red plum, crushed raspberry, dry herb and a savoury close. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, or lightly chilled in summer. Grilled sausages, roast capsicum, or a good burger.
