Birichino St Georges Pinot Noir 2021

Birichino St Georges Pinot Noir is a Santa Cruz-area Pinot Noir led by forty-five-year-old vines on granitic sand.

Eighty-five per cent of the 2021 comes from the Besson vineyard at the southern reach of the Santa Cruz Mountains, organically managed, on rich granitic and sandy loam, established in the early 1900s and named on the label for George Besson himself, a grower Birichino has worked alongside for over two decades. The site falls just outside the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA on a technicality of elevation and which side of the road it happens to sit. The remaining fifteen per cent came from the Enz, Antle and Boer vineyards, the latter two high in Chalone on limestone and granite. Around thirty per cent stems went back into the ferment, then old barriques and demi-muids.

Succulent red fruit, a sappy lift and a touch of forest floor, over a juicy supple palate that asks nothing of you. Serve at 15 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled tuna, or a pork and sage sausage.
