Blank Canvas Element Vineyard Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2019

Blank Canvas Element Vineyard Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah is a peppery, perfumed single-vineyard Syrah from one of New Zealand's best red wine districts.

Matt Thomson and his wife, Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, have decades of winemaking between them, in New Zealand and overseas. They pick a small number of single vineyards and let each one speak for itself. For Syrah they go to the stony old riverbed soils of the Gimblett Gravels, which drain freely, store heat and bring late-ripening reds home. Expect a medium-bodied, northern Rhône-leaning style, matured in French oak.

Pepper and perfume up front, with a fine-boned frame behind. Give it a short decant, then serve at 15–17°C with lamb, game birds, charcuterie or something mushroomy.
