Blank Canvas Una Volta Central Otago Pinot Noir 2018

Blank Canvas Una Volta Central Otago Pinot Noir is a mature New Zealand Pinot Noir, released with some bottle age already on it.

The name is Italian for 'once', which hints at a one-off release. It comes from a dramatic inland region of schist, low rainfall and big swings between warm days and cold nights, conditions that give Pinot Noir concentrated fruit, bright acidity and firm structure. Arriving some years after vintage, it has started to show the savoury, earthy side these wines gain in bottle. Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson, based in Marlborough, go for precision and balance over power.

Red fruit, forest floor and spice, all nicely developed. Decant briefly and serve at 15–16°C with roast duck, lamb shoulder, mushrooms or aged cheeses. Ready now, and it will hold for the next few years.
