Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir 2017

Blank Canvas Upton Downs Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the cool, high Awatere Valley in Marlborough, with some bottle age behind it.

Wind and altitude up here, in one of the highest and coolest corners of the region, keep yields low and give Pinot Noir fine tannins and bright acidity. Matt Thomson, who has spent decades making and consulting on wine in New Zealand and Italy, runs the label with Sophie Parker-Thomson MW. They buy from individual growers and bottle each site separately, and the winemaking is careful and fairly hands-off.

Bottle age has brought earthy, forest-floor notes to the red fruit, and the palate is savoury and fine-boned. It really comes alive with food: try duck, mushroom risotto, lamb or game birds, served at 14–16°C.
