Blind Corner Ramato Pinot Grigio 2023

Blind Corner Ramato Pinot Grigio is a skin-fermented, copper-coloured Grigio from a single Margaret River vineyard.

The word means coppery in Italian, and it describes a Friulian style of Grigio that keeps the juice on its pink-grey skins long enough to take colour and structure. Gould's version comes off the family's certified organic and biodynamic home vineyard at Wilyabrup, four kilometres from the Indian Ocean, where pea gravel runs seven to ten metres deep over porous coffee rock and ironstone. Everything from pruning to bottling is done in-house and additions are off the table. The 2023 fermented on skins for ten days with foot-crushing and hand-plunging, then went to seasoned oak for three months.

Deep in colour and punchy in flavour: citrus, red berry and spice, with a smoky, pithy grip at the end. This is a long way from supermarket Grigio. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees with charcuterie, roast chicken, or a bowl of olives.
