Description
Blind Corner Sangiovese is a medium-bodied red from eight rows of dry-grown Brunello clone vines in Margaret River.
Eight rows is the whole planting: dry-grown Sangiovese in the Goulds' 30-hectare Wilyabrup property, 18 hectares of it under vine, certified organic and biodynamic and sitting on the coastal flats four kilometres from the Indian Ocean. The soil is stony, layers of pea gravel and sand over hard granite. Ben brought the Brunello clone cuttings over himself after working vintages in Italy, and the same trip lies behind the ramato, ripasso and appassimento wines elsewhere in the range. Fruit is destemmed and foot-crushed in open pots, plunged once a day for six days, then pressed to seasoned oak for twelve months before unfiltered bottling.
Cherry and dried herb lead, with a tangy acid line and a dusting of pepper on the finish. Savoury, not sweet. Serve at 16 degrees, lightly cool. Good with pasta al pomodoro, grilled quail, or a plate of salumi.
