Bodegas Cinco Léguas La Maldición Vinos de Madrid Malvar de Valdilecha 2020

Bodegas Cinco Léguas La Maldición Malvar de Valdilecha is a skin-fermented white from a 0.44-hectare plot of old bush vines in the hills east of Madrid.

Vinos de Madrid is an appellation better known for Garnacha, but the chalky clay soils around Valdilecha, some 730 metres above sea level, suit the local white variety Malvar. Marc Isart, who also played a part in the revival of the region's old vineyards at Bernabeleva, farms this tiny parcel organically and biodynamically for very low yields. The winemaking is deliberately archaic: the fruit ferments and macerates with its skins and stalks for fifty days, the way farmers in this part of Spain worked before modern cellars, before pressing and maturation in old 300-litre casks. The long time on skins and stems gives grip and a pulpy, saline texture rather than any obvious oak character, and the wine has been made in this form since 2013.

Drink over the next few years, not too cold, at around 12°C, with roast chicken, grilled octopus or a plate of jamón.
