Bodegas Cinco Léguas Vinos de Madrid La Maldición Tinto Fino 2021

La Maldición Tinto Fino is Marc Isart's Tempranillo-led red from high, stony vineyards at Valdilecha, east of Madrid.

Vinos de Madrid covers three subzones around the capital, and Isart works in the Arganda district at Valdilecha, where old, low-yielding bush vines sit at around 780 metres. The estate takes its name from the area's historic nickname, La Maldicion, 'the curse', earned because a living was so hard to eke out of such isolated, rocky high country. Isart's stated aim is grower wines made for daily drinking, more savoury than sweet, rather than wines made for impact. Now simply labelled Tinto Fino and previously sold as Tinto de Valdilecha, this is roughly 80% mature-vine Tempranillo with the local white grape Malvar from Belmonte, at similar altitude, making up the balance. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically and hand-harvested; the two varieties are co-fermented with natural yeasts, spend 20 to 25 days on skins and are then aged in cement and stainless-steel tanks, with no oak involved.

Made to be drunk young and without ceremony. Serve at 15-16°C with grilled chorizo, roast peppers or a lentil stew.
