Description

Bodegas Exopto La Mimbrera de Exopto is a co-fermented field blend from a half-hectare of old bush vines in Ábalos, farmed organically and worked by mule.

Rioja Alta's village of Ábalos sits under the Sierra Cantabria, where Atlantic influence and limestone soils give lighter, more aromatic wines than the region's warmer south. La Mimbrera was the first plot of old bush vines Tom Puyaubert bought, in 2003. It is a 0.5-hectare parcel barely a kilometre from his El Espinal site but on radically different ground: 450 metres above sea level, 250 metres lower, with far more active limestone in the soil. The planting is a genuine field blend, roughly 75 per cent Tempranillo, 20 per cent Garnacha and 5 per cent Viura, with the Garnacha vines 108 years old and the rest in the 70 to 80 year range. Viticulture is organic and the vines are worked by mule under the grower Miguel Ángel Mato. The fruit is hand-harvested, co-fermented with wild yeasts and matured in a single used French oak barrel, then bottled unfiltered.

Drink now to ten years; it suits lamb chops, grilled mushrooms and Idiazábal. Serve at 16°C.
