Bodegas Exopto Rioja Bozeto de Exopto 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Bodegas Exopto Bozeto de Exopto in 1.5-litre magnum is an entry-level Rioja led by Garnacha rather than the usual Tempranillo.

Bozeto means sketch or outline, and the wine is intended as an introduction to Tom Puyaubert's range: a pan-regional red that takes in all three of Rioja's zones. Where most wines at this level lean on Tempranillo, which is both easier and more profitable to grow, Garnacha here makes up around forty per cent of the blend. It comes from El Agudo, a sixty-year-old plot of sandy river-stone soils at Alfaro on Monte Yerga in Rioja Oriental. The Tempranillo is picked from mature vines at Ábalos in the high country of the Rioja Alta, with a little Ábalos Graciano for freshness and finesse. Puyaubert ferments in a combination of concrete and steel, now with a measure of semi-carbonic maceration, then ages the wine for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats.

The magnum format slows the wine's development a little, so it will hold happily for four or five years. Good with chorizo, grilled lamb or a shared plate of jamón. Serve at 16°C.
