Description
Bozeto de Exopto Rosado is a dry Rioja rosé made by direct press from two mature hillside plots in the Rioja Alta.
Rioja produces far more rosado than its reputation for oak-aged reds suggests, and the highland sites of the Sonsierra give the style the acidity it needs. Tom Puyaubert, the French winemaker behind Bodegas Exopto, draws this wine equally from Garnacha and Tempranillo grown at El Silo in Ábalos and Los Pozos in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, both mineral, wind-exposed hillsides. The grapes go straight to press rather than being bled off a red ferment, so the colour is pale and the fruit stays taut. Fermentation runs on wild yeasts. Around three quarters of the wine is raised in tank on its lees for texture, with the balance in used 600-litre demi-muids, which adds a little breadth and structure without any obvious oak character. It is bottled under screwcap, which keeps it fresh well beyond the usual rosé window.
Drink young and well chilled. Serve at 8-10°C with grilled prawns, jamón and melon, or a chorizo and white bean stew.
