Description
Bodegas Exopto Rioja Horizonte de Exopto is a village-level Rioja drawn from a dozen old-vine plots in the western Sonsierra.
The Sonsierra is the strip of Rioja Alta lying in the lee of the Sierra Cantabria, and the western part of it, as mapped by Villar and Gil, is where all of these parcels sit. Bodegas Exopto is the project of Tom Puyaubert, who came to Rioja from Bordeaux and works with old plots rather than one contiguous estate. Horizonte is 80 per cent Tempranillo with ten per cent each of Grenache and Graciano. It was formerly built on Ábalos fruit alone; it now also takes in the old vines of Los Pozos and El Sacramento at San Vicente, along with fifteen per cent from a vineyard at Baños de Ebro bought in 2019. Altitudes run from 400 metres up to 650 metres in Ábalos's Carrapeciña. The varieties are co-fermented naturally in cement vats, macerated for only a week, then matured in 600-litre demi-muids and barriques.
Drink over the next eight years; serve at 16-17°C with roast lamb, grilled peppers or a mature Manchego.
