Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico 2015

Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico is the flagship red of Spain's most famous estate, on the Duero in Ribera del Duero.

Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 at Valbuena de Duero, in the Valladolid stretch of the river, and for much of the twentieth century it stood almost alone as Spain's answer to the great estates of Bordeaux. Unico is made only in vintages the house judges worthy, from old Tinto Fino vines with a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon whose original cuttings were brought from Bordeaux in the estate's first years. Its defining feature is the ageing: an unusually long passage through large oak vats and barrels of varying age and size, then further years resting in bottle in the cellars before release, which typically comes about a decade after the harvest. The Álvarez family has owned the estate since 1982.

Decant well ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast lamb, game or aged sheep's milk cheese; the wine is released ready to drink but will hold for decades.
