Bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5º 2019

Bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5º is the second great red of Spain's most famous estate, from Ribera del Duero.

Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 at Valbuena de Duero, in the Valladolid stretch of the Duero valley, and this wine takes its name from the village itself. Valbuena is drawn from the same estate vineyards as Unico but from younger parcels, blending Tinto Fino with a small proportion of Merlot. Where the flagship spends the best part of a decade in cask and bottle before it is let out, Valbuena is aged in a combination of large wooden vats and barrels and released in its fifth year after the harvest, which is what the numeral on the label records. It is the more approachable of the two, and for many the clearest expression of the estate's vineyards.

Decant an hour ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast lamb, suckling pig or grilled beef; it will also keep comfortably for a decade or more.
