Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2022

Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is the flagship red of this leading Cape winery, and a classic, serious Syrah.

Although the winery's home is in Franschhoek, it now sources its Syrah from the Swartland, where dry-farmed vineyards give small crops of intense fruit. Boekenhoutskloof has made this wine since the 1990s and it is widely seen as one of the Cape's finest reds. The 2022 is brooding and rich, with dark fruit, liquorice, cured meat, forest floor and cigar box, then an opulent palate of plum, currant and dark cherry, with white pepper and allspice. The tannins are ripe and svelte and the finish is long and savoury.

Give it time: decant well ahead and serve at around 18 degrees with a rack of lamb, venison pie or aged hard cheese. It can cellar for many years.
